Someone ask where Ocean Pond is.  Here is a map:

Lake City is to the west (right) and Jacksonville is to the east.

Yesterday, after posting all those vent lid photos my spelling, punctuation, and paragraph features worked well on my end but not yours – go figure!  Sorry!

With all the climbing up and down on the roof; and extended work up there my Symmetric Psoriatic Arthritis kicked up real bad (as it does from time to time)  I stayed in bed until after 10 AM.  I don’t complain too much about my condition  – there are the very bad days – but I remember when Miss Peggy had to vacuum the bed every day and I was walking with two canes.  Thank God for Humira.

After arising, I did get up on the roof between raindrops and finish the last vent lid and cover.  I had to rebuild the entire vent before it was all over.  I walked to the shower building and took a very long hot shower.  Miss Peggy was doing laundry today.  She had snagged a coupon for CiCi’s Pizza, so we went off for a late lunch of all you can eat pizza, salad, and drinks, $12 for both of us!  We loved their BBQ pizza and Bacon Double Cheese Pizza.  We only have pizza once a month due to her diet.

After the late lunch (2:30) we went to the movie to see Chappie in Lake City.  We liked the movie with a lot of humor and excitement.  Too bad about the language and brief bloody violence or it would be good for the grand kids.

Tomorrow I continue the process of getting new tires (and an oil change) for the big Red Dodge.  Six large tires is a major purchase so I am doing some serious shopping.

Even though I said not again, guess what brand we will probably buy?

Replacing the Broken Vent Cover

Today started out like any other work day at Ocean Pond.  Our friends Chuck & Cathy were leaving today so we have to go over for goodbyes and hugs.

Chuck & Cathy for Wisconsin

Chuck & Cathy from Wisconsin.  Note the small purple tent behind their rig. The people moving into their site are already setting up!

They are off to Fort Pickens in the Florida Panhandle.  We had planned to go to this historic national park next week but had a hard time getting reservations.  We found out it is spring break and have decided to stay at Ocean Pond – guess we are getting old!

We went into Lake City for a parts run.  First was Wal-mart for water and marshmallows. Some old geezer was filling up about 28 one gallon water bottle but  had an organization problem.  It took him twice a long as it should have.  We buy our drinking water here or at Publix for either 27 cents or 30 cents a gallon.

Some Wal-Mart’s have two machines, this one has one.  We waited a long time.   Our friends Len & Mary had a leak in their water heater and have been working on it for five days which included welding the aluminum water heater tank.  We drove to Lowe’s where I purchased a number of parts for our rig and one 44 cent part for Len.  We needed a part for our batteries which we will install sometime this week, weather permitting.

Just wanted to give you a idea of how thick 2/0 battery cable it.

From there we drove to Camping World to get the replacement roof vent cover that is cracked.  This is what I found for options:

Yup, they are all different.  I choose the “correct” one (what a guy ask a woman parts clerk for help).  I had eight picture of the old vent to help in my choice.  From there to the RV salvage place one part for Len, and of course I had to buy something for us.  A guy in a RV salvage yard is like a kid in a candy store.
From there we went to produce stand A.  They were a little pricey so off to produce stand C (we were at B last week).  At last great produce at good prices.  Finally back home by 2 PM!!
While Miss Peggy was fixing lunch we found out that we left our bags at produce stand C  😦
After lunch I climbed up on the roof only to find out my “choice” was not so good as the vent lid didn’t fit.  While up there it started to rain, and I mean rain.  Len had come over saying he had to go to town for one more part (38 cents).  Since we were going back to Camping World we volunteered to save him a trip.
At Camping World the nice lady helped me out (I did have the old part in my hand at this time) and the perfect part was found.
It was still raining off and on so Miss Peggy fixed a late diner of local sausage and mac & cheese – boy was that good.
The rain stopped about 6:30, but it was too wet for a campfire.

The no campfire worked out okay as I had another tax return to do, so I got that 90% finished – just waiting for more info from the couple.  People simply email me attachments of their information and I can do their taxes no matter where I am.  The internet is pretty neat.

Work Day Tuesday at Ocean Pond

We started our today with a nice walk around the complete campground.

Today’s work was on the roof, and while I was up there Peggy continued to polish the fifth wheel with her trusty can of Gel Gloss.

I slowly went up on the roof.  Ladders that are built on RVs aren’t always the most sturdy.  Our is removal (so the garage door can swing down) and even less sturdy.  Our regular folding ladder isn’t tall enough for us to use as we are 13 feet tall so up the RV ladder I go.

Being the ladder is the worse part, and I don't like heights, I was on the roof four hours!

Two covers went on as directed in the instructions, and of course two didn’t and we had to modify the instructions.

We had decided to put new covers on four of the vents and leave the fifth one alone as it is in the garage and very hard to get to.  As things go the fifth vent (in the back) is cracked so next trip to Camping World I will buy not only a fifth vent cover but also the hatch cover.

The view from up on the roof is pretty good!

Work Day at Ocean Pond

I was up very early (too early) this morning.  Last night our neighbors told us they were moving today and they had two pallets they were leaving.  Hum – hardwood pallets – great firewood.  They were leaving with the sun (we never do that!), so I went over there at first light and got the two pallets.  I got the saw and axe out and had them all cut and split before Miss Peggy was up! DSC02350Check one item off my list!

Next I started to paint the hitch of the fifth wheel, Miss Peggy seeing ladders and other items out thought this was a nice day to polish the front cap of the fifth wheel (note – this wasn’t on yesterday’s work list but very needed).  So we gathered up all the supplies she needed and got her started.

DSC02349This takes a few hours to do.

She is using a product called Gel Gloss which is from our sailing days.

As you can see we have to constantly move ladders & trucks, and change clothes!

DSC02353

DSC02355Meanwhile I was working on repainting the hitch.

DSC02354I am not happy with the end result and will be putting another coat on.  I used a flat paint and will put a semi-gloss on for the second coat; the hitch is only half dry so you see streaks in this photo. (Note the shine on the gloss of the fifth wheel – Yeah Miss Peggy)

To prepare for all of this we had to get some of our storage tubs out and rearrange items in them as they aren’t in logical order.

DSC02351 Every time I get these tubs out a few more items go into trash or give-a-way 🙂

Between moving Miss Peggy’s ladder, scrapping and painting, I worked on the ATV to repair some damage from an accident we had a few years ago. After a few phone calls I found out that the cable we ordered to install the inverter has been sitting at the post office since Friday (the tracking number wasn’t posted on the ship document from the vendor).  We left to pick up our General Delivery at 4:30 and I was the last one they let in the door at the Post Office!  It was there along with another package – I had to order the complete set of Harry Potter movies.  We then went to Camping World and our vent covers were in, from there to Winn-Dixie for groceries.  We finally got back to Ocean Pond at 7:15, ate a quick supper, went to check on the single gal who was at the dentist all day today, and then to sit around a campfire with friends until about 9 PM.

From our campfire two of the gals said they saw a gator swimming on Ocean Pond, (but being after dark none of us got up to check it out 🙂

Rain Rain Go Away

Rain Cold Rain Cold Rain Cold Rain Cold Rain Cold Rain Cold Rain Cold

I guess you know how today is at the Pond.

We slept in a little, took a little (very little) walk between rain showers, dug out the heavier coats.  Not our favorite day at the campground.

It was so windy last night the old man guarding our fifth wheel blew over!

About noon we saw a little clearing and having to return the rental car we took off for Lake City.  We were shocked that there was a line at Enterprise, after waiting our turn we got rid of the little white rental car.  We went to Wal-Mart for drinking water – they have a machine that you can get pure water to refill your containers for only 27 cents a gallon.  We got 6 1/2 gallons. (I dropped one and lost 1/2 gallon in the parking lot – don’t laugh that was 13.5 cents!)

Off we went to Camping World to get two more roof vent covers, these allow us to leave the roof vents open during the light rain.  We have one vent, 3 vents with fans, and one Fantastic Fan vent.  We are putting covers over four of these.  No pictures of any of this as it is  raining   of course.  Camping World was out of them, but I spied a lock for our fifth wheel hitch on sale half price at $10.50.  I wanted one of these but couldn’t part with the 20 bucks and there is was in a beat up box.  Paid our money and the nice gal at Camping World gave us a Camping World Lucky Dollar Days lottery ticket.  Hey we won 10 bucks off our next purchase. 🙂  Good Deal.

As it was cold and raining, I started to replace more of the inside old lights with LED lights. I turned on an old light just to see how it was in the fixture, it wasn’t on but for 1 minute and I got a second degree burn when I touched the bulb.  That large blister on my right index finger will bother me for weeks.

This is the G4 replacement bulb for the halogen lights we have.

They are pure white, use 1.8 watts of electricity and put out a little more light than the old bulbs.

This is a package of the old 20 watt halogen bulbs.

This is a package of the old 20 watt halogen bulbs.

The new LED’s look a little weird, but they work.  As you can see per each light we went from 20 watts to 1.8 watts of electricity being used.  The LED’s last over 20,000 hours which is a lot longer than the halogen bulb.  Seeing the halogen bulbs are expensive this is a no brainer.  We have six of these halogen fixtures so when both rows of the lights are on we were burning 1200 watts of energy.  We now are burning 108 watts of energy!  You can see the saving especially when we are burning our own fossil fuel to make our own electricity.

I left one of the outside new LED lights on all night, since I already burned my finger what the heck lets see how hot it is.  You can touch it with no problem.

We realize that we are spending a months worth of groceries on new light bulbs, but expect to realize the savings within the year!

We pray for better weather tomorrow!

Just after supper the cold rain came in with a flurry!  We have to take the rental car back tomorrow, go to Camping World.  We often look at Camping World and then compare prices at AMAZON or Ebay.
